babynutrition.be fully supports the principles of the World Health Organisation and advice from Belgian childhood associations such as ONE, Office de la Naissance et de l’Enfance, and Kind en Gezin that breastfeeding provides the best source of nutrition for a baby.
babynutrition.be represents foods for infants and young children aged from 0-36 months. Appropriate food in the early life is essential for a good growth and development.
Infant Formulae | From 0 to 6 months
babynutrition.be fully supports the principles of the World Health Organisation and advice from Belgian childhood associations such as ONE, Office de la Naissance et de l’Enfance, and Kind en Gezin, that breastfeeding provides the best source of nutrition for a baby.
For mothers who cannot or decide not to breastfeed, infant formulae are the only appropriate and safe alternative to meet the nutritional requirements of babies from birth until 6 months.
The nutritional composition of infant formulae is regulated at European level.
Follow-on-formulae | From 6 to 12 months
“Follow-on formula” means food intended for infants when appropriate complementary feeding is introduced and which constitutes the principal liquid element in a progressively diversified diet of such infants.
The nutritional composition of follow-on-formulae is regulated at European level.
Growing-up milk | From 12 to 36 months
“Growing-up milk” has been developed as one of the products to complement the diet of young children aged 1-3 years.
“Children should preferably receive an adapted milk formula until the age of 3. At this age, this means breastfeeding or an adapted milk formula. Together with supplementary feeding, they provide enough protein and nutrients to meet the daily needs of a child. If you opt for bottle-feeding, you should give growing-up milk1”.
Unlike the infant formulae and follow-on-formulae, the composition of “growing-up milk” is not specifically regulated at European level but it is usually enriched with several nutrients such as iron and vitamin D, has an adequate fatty acids and protein composition.

“Kinderen krijgen bij voorkeur een aangepaste melkvoeding tot de leeftijd van 3 jaar. Op deze leeftijd is dat borstvoeding of een aangepaste melkvoeding. Samen met de bijvoeding leveren zij voldoende eiwitten en voedingsstoffen om in de dagelijkse behoefte van een kind te voorzien. Kies je voor flesvoeding dan geef je groeimelk.”
Processed cereal-based products and baby foods | From 4 to 36 months
During the weaning period, infants change from a milk-based diet to one made up of a variety of foods and drinks often called complementary foods. A wide range of such products are available on the Belgian market. These foods have a balanced composition to contribute adequately to the nutritional requirements of young children up to 3 years old (e.g. salt levels are kept to a minimum).
European law sets out rules for the composition of weaning products (fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals) including, where necessary, minimum and maximum levels.
Foods for Special Medical Purposes, also called FSMP, for infants and young children
A range of special formulae has been developed for the dietary management of infants and young children affected by a disease, disorder or medical condition, e.g. metabolic disorders or allergies. They are to be used under medical supervision.
The specific compositional requirements of FSMP intended for infants and young children are regulated at European level.
